The Beginning of Our Mission

The Beginning of Our Mission

Not often do we find ourselves in a situation that we can say post script…”Saturday travel was uneventful”. The largest group leaving from Kansas City had a slight delay departing for connection in Houston and were able to make the flight to Guatemala City and land a few minutes early. Team members arriving from Los Angeles, Tulsa, and West Virginia arrived with no issues. Twenty three New volunteers anxiously awaited the usual one and a half hour trip over the mountain into Antigua, but a recent landslide due to heavy rain in a nearby volcano watershed had washed out the secondary road leading from the area into Guatemala City. This led to an extended bus trip lasting about three hours.

Needless to say, even the thirty experienced volunteers were eager to get into town, and freshen up after the longer then expected transit. Sunday is expected to be as busy as previous years, along with four Urology surgeons and one Otorhinolaryngology surgeon the team welcomes back a new physiotherapy team to increase the number of patients we are able to provide care for. The waiting rooms are full of patients who have traveled up to days to arrive and get news that they may be a good candidate for the surgery they hope to receive this week.

Back from a long hiatus is the Art Ambassador team who’s mission and goal is to provide nurturing interaction with the children, families, and patients who are patiently waiting for consultation. Through simple communication, playing games, and crafts bring a positive, light aire to the courtyard, and they all wait for thier turn with the experts.
